Morning tea with William Cooper

Posted by gabi on February 14, 2013

Bill, a world renowned painter of wildlife, particularly birds, came over to do some preliminary sketches of our drake, and then came down to my studio for some morning tea!

It was a lovely morning, but unfortunately Drakey wasn't looking his splendiferous best. Bill saw him a few months ago when he had his magnificent green head and lovely airbrushed plumage, but but now he looks rather drab (he lost his emerald head and went all spotty) as he undergoes his summer moult. Nevermind, Bill said that he can refer to QLD museum specimens for correct colour and plumage of a Mallard, as the main purpose of sketching Drakey was to capture the correct mannerisms and body language of the bird. Sarah filmed Bill as he was sketching to add to the documentary she is making of William Cooper.

It was lovely talking to Bill whilst we had our morning tea, how he started out as an artist, and had William Dobell as a kind of mentor, a very shy and timid fellow - not that you could tell that from his portraits! Bill and his art is very inspiring.

Having spoken with an artist who is so well known and professional as Bill, it inspires me to 'tidy' up my act. I need to be more one-eyed and focused on my artwork, to produce the best I can possibly can. I just wish I could be more certain of the direction I want to take.

I am full time back in my studio, fulfilling orders for my local retail outlet. Things have gone quiet on the online front, which it usually does at this time of year, and I am now thinking about my art practice.  I will have to focus on what direction I will take - do I continue on with my animal sculptures, rainforest pods or do I go back and resurrect/reinvent my Lightscapes? Do I have too many fingers in too many pies? Should I be focusing on a specific genre like Bill?
