A successful opening

At the beginning of this month, we had the Yungaburra Village Artists exhibition opening at the Tablelands Regional Gallery.

As the coordinator of the Yungaburra Village Artists, I always feel a bit nervous getting up in front around 200 people to act as the MC. We were lucky to have Fiona Sewell who is a ABC far north radio presenter open our exhibition for us. She is a great speaker and without too much ado, she opened the exhibition for us. It was a great night and considering it was the school holidays we had a good turn-out, but perhaps not quite so many people as previous years. Michael said that the reduced numbers made the opening not quite so crowded and so it was better to see the artworks.

I was very pleased how my parliament (collective noun for owls) were displayed. I had them set up in my studio and was a bit concerned that they didn't look right all at the same level. Once in the gallery however, we set the owls in a narrative setting - the dark owls 'talking' to one another in a group and the other owls set apart and on lower levels. This positioning made the installation more dynamic than how I had them set out on my studio table.

I thought the title "A vulnerable parliament" left the installation open to interpretation on a few different levels. Many people thought it was a political statement about the fragile nature of Federal politics mainly due to the term parliament in the title, while my main objective was an environmental comment of how a creature can obtain a 'vulnerable' status yet still slip too easily into an endangered status or gone altogether.  I was very pleased at the response my lesser sooty owls received, and I sold four out of the seven!

Brilliant exhibition, some really nice work on display. Really loved the parliament of owls and their setting in the exhibition.
Well done on the sales side as well, people obviously know great talent when they see it.
Would have love to have taken one of the owls home to Perth with me but I think they might have felt a little displaced in WA, out of their normal habitat.
