What a Lark!

Posted by admin on September 26, 2012

I'm so pleased to have received an email saying that my image of "Lake Eacham Lightscape" will be published by Lark books (US) in their '500 Prints on Clay' publication.

I must say it was a bit of a buzz to receive that news! The book will be coming out in March next year. Lark Books have a fantastic series of art books, and I often consult them especially for inspiration. They source work from all over the world, and it is always interesting what other people are doing elsewhere. I must thank Sarah Scragg for taking the photos that were accepted. I am very fortunate to have such a talented photographer at close hand!

I have been very busy lately with the design and manufacture of a series of functional ware products. A local retail outlet Fixed Abode had commissioned me to make 8 different sets of plates, cups and bowls for an exclusive launch. It is always stressful ironing out the problems when designing and making something from scratch when you have a deadline, and even though it seemed like I mightn't get it done, I was able to find the source of the problems just in time! Typical R&D though...

My multipiece owl mould worked! It ended up being at least 12 pieces, so I feel pretty chuffed to have worked it all out, although there are many things I could do to improve the quality of the mould - possibly reassess where the joins should go. It is a steep learning curve and I have plenty of room to improve, but at least the mould was successful enough for me to slip cast my owls.

I am currently waiting for my slip cast owls to come out of the big bertha kiln (hopefully unscathed!). I have made 8 life-size Lesser Sooty owls for an installation. The installation titled "A vulnerable parliament" is going in the Yungaburra Village Artists exhibition next month. The opening night is Friday 5th October 6-8pm at the Tablelands Regional Gallery in Atherton, so if anyone is close by, please pop in!
